Victoria Nadas stages various encounters
between the old & the new, the collective & the individual, the
other & the self in her works, the result of learning to combine a
European heritage with the Australian present.
These collisions are sensually & courageously traced using red
thread, the expression of blood lines in Hungarian culture.
Bringing into spectacular relief the accidental nature of
inheritance & roots, Nadas' works offer a vision of that which is
beyond geography & deeper than history.
Mapping her own personal history, Nadas' works invite the viewer to
reflect on his or her own past, re-discovering the trails we leave
behind.

When I was a child, my mother & her friends
would sit & sew while painting their nails, smoking & talking. There
were no patterns, things were just made. There was very little
money, so the women were resourceful: a curtain one day became a
ball gown the next weekend. There was no stopping their ingenuity.
I work the same way: when I see a material that I love, I want to
experiment with it to see what it can express for me.
